Not sure what your first online therapy session actually looks like? Here’s a clear walkthrough — no surprises, no jargon.

What actually happens in a first online therapy session?

Your first session is mostly about your practitioner getting to know you — not diving straight into deep analysis. Expect a conversation, not an interrogation: they’ll ask what brought you in, a bit about your background, and what you’re hoping to get out of sessions. It’s closer to a first real conversation with someone new than a clinical exam.

How do I actually join the session?

You’ll get a link ahead of your scheduled time. At the time of your session, you click the link, your camera and mic turn on, and you’re in — no separate app to download, no account setup beyond your original booking. All you need is a phone or laptop with a stable internet connection and a private space.

What will they ask me?

Typically: what’s bringing you to therapy right now, a little about your day-to-day life and any recent changes, whether you’ve been to therapy before, and what you’d like to feel different about by the end of your sessions. You’re not expected to have polished answers — “I’m not totally sure, I just know something feels off” is a completely fine place to start.

Do I have to talk about everything in the first session?

No. You control the pace entirely. A good practitioner won’t push you to disclose more than you’re comfortable with in session one. Trust tends to build over a few sessions, not instantly — it’s completely normal to open up more gradually.

How long does it last, and what happens after?

Sessions typically run 45–60 minutes. Toward the end, your practitioner will usually share initial impressions and, if it feels right for both of you, suggest a rough plan for what future sessions could focus on. There’s no obligation to commit to anything beyond that first session — you decide if and when to book the next one.

What if I don’t feel a connection with my practitioner?

That’s a completely normal and valid outcome — therapeutic fit matters as much as credentials. If the first session doesn’t feel right, you’re free to try a different practitioner for your next booking. It’s not a failure on your part; it’s just part of finding the right fit.

Is it actually private?

Yes — sessions are one-on-one and confidential, the same as any in-person therapy session, just conducted over video instead of in an office.
